Which came first: Women's purse or Men's satchel?

Today I took action into my own hands and did some first rate investigation. I was forced to take such actions due to the circumstance that is a woman questioning the legitimacy of the messenger bag/satchel. When I was bombarded by my bag being referred to as a "Man purse" I knew my masculinity was in question, and was forced to take brutal action!
