Kasturi deer is one of seven species in the genus Moschus, the only genus in the family Moschidae. Kasturi deer are different from deer (cervidae) and are older. Kasturi deer do not have antlers and preorbital glands and only have a pair of nipples, one bladder, one Glandula odorifera (smell-producing glands), a pair of protruding teeth that are the object of human hunting and one musk gland.
Kasturi deer generally live in mountainous forests in South Asia such as the Himalayas. All species of Moschidae are now in Asia, although fossils of relatives of the Kasturi Deer from the Oligocene have been found in Europe.
