Jen Psaki's Alarming Response to China's Terrifying New Weapon
As our adversaries are testing missiles and developing advanced weapons around the world, it seems like the United States is nowhere to be found. North Korea recently took a provocative step and has begun testing for the first time in two years a missile that could be launched from submarines. We’ve also learned that back in August, China was testing a hypersonic missile. This highly dangerous weapon would have the capability to go into space to a target anywhere in the world. These are not just one-off events, they’re a signal to the entire world.
ACLJ Senior Counsel for Global Affairs and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo explained the implications of nations developing dangerous weapons and conducting tests:
"I have read the reporting, it looks consistent with the missile test out of a place called Sinpo. It’s a traditional North Korean military launch point. When they engage in this kind of activity, they get better. Every time they try. Even if the operation itself is a failure, they learn, they gather data. This is why what President Trump did, when he met with Chairman Kim to get them to stop conducting these tests, was so important. It denied them the capacity to continue their abilities to threaten the United States and our allies."
White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki had a different opinion on these missile tests. When asked about the China hypersonic missile testing, she said:
"We’ve made clear our concerns about the military capabilities that the PRC [People’s Republic of China] continues to pursue. And we have been consistent in our approach with China: We welcome stiff competition, but we do not want that competition to veer into conflict."
Sec. Pompeo countered Psaki’s response:
"There is no doubt that the Chinese Communist Party is intent on building a military that can dominate the American military. . . . Our adversaries don’t stand still. We have to continue to . . . do the things we need to do to secure our freedom. We did that. President Trump built our military up and began to conduct research on all kinds of things we just hadn’t done for the 8 years prior to that. My biggest concern is the White House Press person saying we “welcome” competition from China. No, we don’t welcome competition from the Chinese Communist Party. We want to continue to be the beacon for freedom around the world. We don’t want to live in a society that is dominated by a Marxist-Leninist ideology. We need to make sure we have the military capability to defend ourselves and the economic might to help our partners and friends around the world."
