Latvia: Children and parents demonstrate against COVID sports retrix in Riga - 18.10.2021

Am Montag versammelten sich Einwohner von Riga vor dem Bildungsministerium, um gegen Einschränkungen der sportlichen Aktivitäten für Kinder und Jugendliche aufgrund der Coronavirus-Pandemie zu protestieren.

Die Demonstranten zogen durch die Straßen der lettischen Hauptstadt, skandierten "Wir wollen trainieren!" und schlugen mit Hockeyschlägern auf den Boden. Unter den Demonstranten waren auch junge Sportler und ihre Eltern.

In Lettland ist die Impfung gegen COVID-19 für Kinder unter 12 Jahren nicht vorgeschrieben. Gemäß den neuen Beschränkungen im Zusammenhang mit der Verbreitung des Coronavirus dürfen Kindersportler jedoch nicht in der Halle trainieren, selbst wenn sie negativ auf COVID-19 getestet wurden.

"Sie [Kinder] sitzen zu Hause, sie lernen nicht, was machen sie also zu Hause? Sie sitzen am Computer, sie sitzen am Telefon, anstatt sich normal zu entwickeln, Sport zu treiben und alles andere zu tun", sagte ein Demonstrant.

Die lettischen Behörden hatten am 11. Oktober den nationalen Notstand ausgerufen, weil die Zahl der Infektionen mit dem Coronavirus COVID-19 gestiegen war. Der Ausnahmezustand wird im Land drei Monate lang in Kraft bleiben.

Ungeimpfte Einwohner haben nur noch Zugang zu Lebensmittelgeschäften, während geimpfte oder erkrankte Personen Einkaufszentren und andere Einrichtungen besuchen können, in denen Besucherkontrollen und Hygienemaßnahmen durchgeführt werden müssen.

Riga locals gathered outside the Ministry of Education, Monday, to protest against restrictions on sports activities for children and young people due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Demonstrators could be seen marching through the streets of the Latvian capital, chanting "We want to train!" and banging hockey sticks on the ground. Among the protesters were young athletes and their parents.

In Latvia, vaccination against COVID-19 is not compulsory for children under 12 years of age. However, according to new restrictions related to the spread of coronavirus infection, child athletes are not allowed to practice indoors even if they test negative for COVID-19.

"They [children] sit at home, they don't study, so what do they do at home? They sit with computers, they sit with their phones instead of normal development, sports and everything else," a protester said.

Latvian authorities declared a national emergency situation due to an increase in the incidence of the COVID-19 coronavirus infection on 11 October. The state of emergency will remain in force in the country for three months.

Unvaccinated residents will only have access to convenience stores, while those who have been vaccinated or have had the disease will be able to visit shopping centres and other establishments, where visitor controls and sanitary measures must be in place.
