America had finally elected its first Black President—and for two terms at that. To have a Black man in the White House was at last the realization of a dream—a dream which had propelled generations of African Americans to holy and civic action. It sure had been a long time coming. However, even with a Black President in office, gross inequities persisted.
During several administrations, strides had been taken and legislation enacted which were directly aimed at benefiting the Black Community. Even before all this, a small contingent of forward-thinking visionaries had already hatched a plan which would totally reshape the conversation about the Black plight, Black progress and Black promise. They felt compelled to shift their narrative from one of dependence upon government “gimmes” and socialized subsistence to one of self-sufficiency and self-determination. They felt obliged to take matters into their own hands and on their own terms for the future of their people.
Would their efforts suffice to propel them and their families to their future? Which hazards, setbacks or even opportunities would they encounter? Follow the saga of a small, but determined group of Black trailblazers in erecting, not just a unique community, but an entire culture in their quest to fulfill their own "Manifest Destiny." Rosewood, Black Wall Street, Black Harlem and others were just the beginning.
