Imputed Righteousness: Justification - October 17, 2021

In last week’s message, we saw how Paul clearly presents the human problem: We are all sinners. God requires us to be righteous, but because we are all sinners infected with the sin nature, we can never make ourselves righteous. God understands our dilemma, and he has provided a solution. As Paul said in Rom. 1:17, “In the gospel a righteousness from God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith from first to last.” What is “righteousness”? Righteousness means having a life that is acceptable in God’s eyes. There are two aspects of righteousness that work together to form a whole. Theologians call these two aspects “imputed righteousness” and “imparted righteousness”. Next week we will look at imparted righteousness, but in today’s message, we will focus on imputed righteousness. “Imputed righteousness” is like the story of the prince and the pauper. In a sense, we trade places with Jesus. Jesus takes our sins upon himself, and God treats us as if we have the righteousness of Jesus. This is what the Bible calls “justification”. Paul explains this concept in Romans 3:21 - 5:21.
