This is the third of a series of short videos on Low dose Medicine and in particular Cytokines. this video introduces the cytokine Interferon Gamma.
IFN- γ is produced mainly by T-cells, natural killer T (NKT) cells and natural killer (NK) cells in response to antigenic (virus, bacteria, parasites) and mitogenic (cell division) stimulation.
IFN-γ has anti-viral, anti-microbic and anti-tumoral effects, but it is also able to potentiate the effects of the type I interferons such as IFN-α and IFN- β and to stimulate macrophages to kill bacteria that have been previously engulfed.
Indications: Antiviral and highly antibacterial activity especially during the initial onset of infections. Opportunistic infections in immune compromised patients. Cold and flu prevention and therapy. Allergic syndromes prevention and cure.
