The Rottweiler was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1931. Rottweilers were first shown in the United Kingdom at Crufts in 1936. A separate register for the breed was established in 1966. In fact, the Rottweiler's popularity peaked in the mid-1990s, when it was the most registered dog with the American Kennel Club. The Rottweiler was named the eighth most popular purebred dog in the United States by the American Kennel Club in 2017.

Rottweilers are prone to obesity whether they are overfed or under-exercised. Obesity can have serious consequences, such as arthritis, breathing difficulties, diabetes, heart failure, reproductive issues, skin disease, decreased resistance to disease, and overheating caused by the thick jacket of fat under the skin.

Rottweilers have an average lifespan of 8 to 10 years, according to breed surveys in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Denmark, as well as UK vet data.
