The mayor of Huntington Beach, California has branded a recent oil spill a ‘potential ecological disaster,’ challenging those responsible to find urgent solutions.

Authorities first reported the spill on Saturday, and it has so far covered 33 square kilometres of the Pacific Ocean. The leak was plugged by the evening, but not before oil slicks had washed up across Huntington Beach.

Furthermore, Talbert Marsh, a local ecological reserve, was also affected by the spill.

Environmental campaigners have since called for the halting of all offshore drilling, claiming the disaster highlights how ‘dirty and dangerous’ the process really is.
