Greece: Antifascist counter-protests erupt after far-right rally in Thessaloniki - 02.10.2021

Around 2,000 members of Antifa and other left-wing groups marched to protest the gathering of the Ieros Lohos nationalists political group, in Thessaloniki on Saturday. Anarchists, pacifists, communists and antifascist groups held the counter protest less than 200 metres (656 feet) away from the far-right rally at Terpsithea square. Some groups were involved in clashes with police who deployed tear gas and stun grenades while the counter protesters threw fireworks, stones and Molotov petrol bombs. The right-wing protest was organised in support of students who were detained in recent clashes with a leftist student group and the police. About 120-150 people participated in the right-wing support rally that was directed against communism. The nationalists finished their rally by singing the national anthem, with some concluding with the Nazi salute. Traffic in the city centre was blocked for two hours and several cars were reportedly damaged during the protests. Two counter protesters were arrested, according to local reports. A Golden Dawn backed far-right youth group was involved in clashes at a Thessaloniki school on Wednesday. The group attacked a left-wing rally with flares, rocks and petrol bombs, during a protest against government education reforms.
