General Milley and Other Military Officials Testify on Afghanistan Withdrawal
Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, Joint Chiefs of Staff Chair Gen. Mark Milley and U.S. Central Command Commander Gen. Kenneth McKenzie testified on the Afghanistan withdrawal for a second day on Capitol Hill. House Armed Services Committee members lodged multiple questions and raised several concerns with the military leaders. Topics included the chaotic evaucations of Americans and Afghan allies following the Taliban takeover, the collapse of the Afghan government and security forces, future counterterrorism operations in Afghansitan and the botched drone strike that killed civilians including children following the ISIS-K attack at the Kabul airport. Separately, Gen. Milley also addressed several questions regarding his calls to China post-2020 elections to reassure them that then President Trump would not be attacking them. Revelations of these calls first surfaced in execerpts from Bob Woodward and Robert Costa’s book, “Peril.”
