Cytokines Series: Interferon Alpha - The Antiviral Cytokine #shorts

This is the second of a series of short videos on Low dose Medicine and in particular Cytokines. this video introduces the cytokine Interferon Alpha.
Low dose medicine is a new therapeutic approach which aims at restoring physiology through communicating or signaling molecules such as cytokines, interleukins, growth factors, neuropeptides, neurotransmitters and hormones prepared in low dose-active dilutions and therefore without side effects.
IFN-α is involved in both the innate and adaptive immune response and it is produced by virus infected cells, mainly monocytes and macrophages.
IFN-α antiviral effect is expressed by activation of macrophages, natural killers (NK) cells, T helper (Th) lymphocytes, cytotoxic (CD8 +) T lymphocytes and also the synthesis of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC).
IFN-α activity in the early phase of immune response is synergic with other cytokines such as IL 2.
IFN-alpha also inhibits the proliferation of B-cells and and selectively blocks the expression of some mitochondrial genes.
Indications: Recurrent and acute viral infections especially in the initial response. Antiproliferative effects, useful in cancer support therapy.
