The top knots and scaly plumage on the undersides of Callipepla gambelii birds make them clearly identifiable. Male Gambel's quail have copper feathers on the top of their heads, black cheeks, and white stripes above their eyes, and females have bluish-gray plumage on much of their bodies. The bird is 11 in (28 cm) long on average, with a wingspan of 14–16 in (36–41 cm). These birds have long, featherless legs and short, rounded wings. Plant materials and seeds make up the majority of its diet.
