Why should you study the Bible?

You should study the Bible because it will give you the knowledge of God. You should study the Bible because it contains the words of eternal life. You should study the Bible because it will make you wise for salvation through faith in Jesus Christ.

I remember being taken to church and Sunday School as a child and hearing stories about Jesus and other people in the Bible with flannel graph (if you know what flannel graph is, let me know in the comments below). I enjoyed hearing the Bible stories told to me by my teachers, and it produced a desire within me to read them for myself.

Just before Christmas, when I was 8 years old, we slept over at my grandma’s house. I remember lying on a pallet early the next morning and my aunt Ruth asked me what I wanted for Christmas. I told her, “Aunt Ruth, I want a Bible for Christmas.” She had a look of surprise at my request, but when Christmas morning came I unwrapped a white, imitation leather King James Bible with a gold zipper.

I started reading it right away, looking for all the Bible stories I had heard in Sunday School, and I found them all! There were a lot of big words in there for an 8 year old but I compensated for it by just making up words for what I couldn’t actually read. I read that little white Bible until I literally wore it out. It didn’t save me from my sins, but it made me wise for salvation, and when I heard the gospel at age 9 I responded to the message and accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior of my life.

I’ve loved reading the Bible, over and over again for over 56 years, and it still inspires, instructs, encourages, corrects, guides and comforts me. I want the same thing for you that I have experienced by reading and studying the Bible. Don’t just take mine or other people’s words for it, investigate it for yourself. God has said that if we seek Him we will find Him, if we seek Him with all our heart. God is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him, and the best place to begin seeking Him is in His own Word, the Bible.
