On the Spanish island of Palma in the Atlantic Ocean, part of the Canary archipelago, an eruption began on the Cumbre Vieja volcanic ridge. This chain of volcanoes last erupted in 1971.
The eruption occurred after an increase in seismic activity. Since September 11, 22,000 tremors have been recorded in the area. Before the eruption there was an earthquake with a magnitude of 3.8.
The evacuation of residents of nearby villages began shortly before the eruption. In total, about one thousand people are to be evacuated from this area.
