Tortoises are members of the family Testudinidae, which is part of the Testudines order (from the Latin name for tortoise). While other turtles (including those in the group Chelonia) can be both land-dwelling and water-dwelling, this species is the only one that is entirely terrestrial. It has a shell to protect it from predators and the elements, just as other tortoises. When they're threatened, tortoises like to withdraw their necks and heads straight back into their shells, like other members of the Cryptodira suborder.
