The whale shark (Rhincodon typus) is the largest known species of fish and a slow-moving, filter-feeding carpet shark. The longest known specimen measured 18.8 meters (62 ft). The whale shark is the world's largest nonmammalian vertebrate, and it holds numerous other records for length and weight. It is the only surviving member of the genus Rhincodon and the only family Rhincodontidae in the Chondrichthyes subclass Elasmobranchii. Prior to 1984, it was included in the family Rhinodontidae under the name Rhiniodon.

Whale sharks can only be found in tropical oceans with water temperatures above 21°C (70°F). Whale shark lifespans have been estimated at 80–130 years based on research into vertebral growth bands and free-swimming shark development rates. The megamouth shark and the basking shark are the only other sharks that filter feed, and whale sharks have a far larger mouth. They are harmless to people because they only eat plankton and small fish as food..
