I had a student named Joshua who saw some pirate toys that I had and said that the pirate was in love with the mermaid, but the merman was her father and he wouldn't let them get married. I was also reading the original Little Mermaid story at the time, and was kicking around the lyrics for a song that is coming out next year called Neptune's Daughter. I set the Neptune's Daughter idea aside and decided to explore the Poseidon's Daughter idea instead. What I found out was that Poseidon's Daughter was called Irene and she was the personification of peace. So this song could be taken at face value about a guy who loves a girl who can't love him because her father won't let him, or it can be about a guy who has lost his peace in life and can't seem to get it back. I liked that there can be multiple meanings to the lyrics, which fit in with my original spark of an idea, what if Bob Dylan and Brian Wilson had made an album together after Highway 61 Revisited and Pet Sounds were recorded? What would that have sounded like? Maybe something like this. I also enjoyed recording this song with my own daughter Etta Minnix, who sings harmony on it. And special thanks to Chandler Reis who let me borrow his Samick electric 12 string guitar. I used my own Samick acoustic 12 string, and my Daphne 12 string that I built myself in this song as well.Show more
