According to Abraham Maslow's famous Hierarchy of Needs, Peak Experiences play an important role in Self-actualization (though these are not restricted solely to self-actualized individuals), and are often described as transcendent moments of pure joy and elation that stand out from everyday events.

3 Characteristics of Peak Experiences
* Fulfillment: generate positive emotions and are intrinsically rewarding.
* Significance: lead to an increase in personal awareness and understanding, and can serve as a turning point in a person's life.
* Spiritual: people often feel "at one" with the world, and may experience a sense of losing track of time
