The Procession of the Bride and Groom at a Traditional Wedding in East Java
East Java has diverse cultures and customs. Each region in East Java has a cultural identity that is influenced by historical background. In this article, we will discuss the sequence of the traditional East Javanese wedding procession, especially the Mojokerto area.
If examined from a historical point of view. the ex-residential areas of Surabaya (Sidoardjo, Mojokerto, Jombang, and Malang) were slightly influenced by Matraman culture, but later became a trading center that attracted foreign tourists. The ex-resident of Surabaya has also become a place of blending of East Javanese culture.
In East Javanese custom, especially Mojokerto, after the bride and groom go through a series of processions ranging from watching (seeing), nakokno (asking), handing over offerings (peningsetan), undergoing siraman on the night of walimahan, to saying the marriage contract religiously. The time has come for the bride and groom to carry out the procession of the bride and groom. Some traditions such as loro pangkon, handing over a rooster as offerings, and the ritual of exchanging sekar rontek characterize the procession of the bride and groom at an East Javanese traditional wedding.
Loro Pangkon
Loro Pangkon is intended as an intermediary for communication between the families of the bride and groom. Each of them is represented by an elder who is qualified or skilled at communicating in polite language, and can even sing Javanese songs. In this procession included gifts or gifts from the groom to the bride in the form of goods according to the wishes of the woman.
handover
Some examples of objects that are used as handovers, for example, a rooster that serves as a means of communication between the women and men. If there is an agreement for the proposal, then the rooster is handed over.
In addition, the groom also gives other gifts such as jodang, tools for lifting food or objects brought by the groom to the bride, wire powder or household utensils made of copper clay, kloso pillows or bedding.
Laughing
In ancient times, the royal party always had escorts from both the front and back sides wherever they went. Therefore, the bride who is likened to a king also walks escorted by a retinue who carries a spear or an umbrella.
Change Sekar Rontek
Sekar rontek is an artistic decoration made of coconut leaves and colorful paper flowers. The bride-to-be and the groom-to-be will make sekar rontek to be exchanged and used as aisle decorations after meeting. In other areas, sekar rontek is also known as mayang twins. *
