This workshop focuses and IRS regulations for nonprofits to work in public policy and advocacy. Understanding the regulations gives nonprofits many more options for activities to influence decision-making. What are the differences between lobbying and advocacy and education? How can coalitions effectively influence local policies and stay within the expectations for nonprofits.
Learning Objectives

Participants in this workshop will learn:
• The differences between grassroots lobbying and direct lobbying;
• The financial limits placed on nonprofits by the IRS for lobbying activities;
• How to effectively communicate to policy-makers without lobbying.
Speaker Bio

Dana Stevens has been a community organizer, policy advocate and champion for marginalized populations her entire adult life. Her passion for community begins with empowering local resident to amplify their voice for healthy and safe neighborhoods. Dana has been with Community Action, Service & Advocacy since 2007 and currently serves as the Executive Director. Dana has been a part of SAM since it launched in 2013 and currently leads SAM efforts to support local control measures to prevent marijuana normalization and commercialization. She holds a bachelor’s degree from UCSD in Urban Studies, a certificate in Nonprofit Management from University of San Diego and a Master’s in Public Administration from SDSU.
