a goose is any of many species of waterfowl in the family Anatidae. These geese belong to the Anser and Branta genera, respectively (the black geese). "Goose" is part of the names of certain other birds, most of which are related to shelducks. Other members of the Anatidae family include swans, which are often bigger and smaller than genuine geese, as well as ducks.

There are two types of goose: male and female. When "goose" is followed by "gander", the female goose is meant to be referenced specifically (the latter referring to a male). Goslings are young birds that have yet to leave their nests. It's termed a gaggle when they're on the ground; it's a skein or wedge when they're on the move; and it's a plump when they're in a tight formation.
