There are approximately 6,000 species of lizards in the suborder Lacertilia, which may be found on all continents except Antarctica, as well as on most oceanic island chains. There is a paraphyletic relationship between this group and snakes and Amphisbaenia; certain lizards have a closer relationship with snakes and Amphisbaenia than they do with other groups. Lizards range in size from chameleons and geckos that are only a few centimeters long to the Komodo dragon, which is three meters long.

In their running, most lizards use a powerful side-to-side motion, making them quadrupedal. Secondarily deficient in legs, certain lizards (known as "legless" species) possess lengthy snakelike bodies. These include the forest-dwelling Draco lizards. Males fight off other males and signal, typically with vivid colors, to attract mates and frighten competitors, and they are often territorial. Many smaller lizard species consume insects, whereas the Komodo devours large animals like water buffalo.

For protection, lizards employ venom, camouflage and reflex bleeding as well as the capacity to donate their tails for regeneration..
