In general, a snail is a shelled gastropod. The term is most commonly given to land snails, also known as terrestrial pulmonate gastropod molluscs. However, the common name snail is also applied to the majority of members of the molluscan class Gastropoda who have a coiled shell large enough for the animal to retreat fully within. When the term "snail" is used in this broad meaning, it encompasses not just land snails but also several species of sea snails and freshwater snails. Slugs are gastropods that lack a shell or have just an internal shell, while semi-slugs are land snails that have only a very tiny shell (that they cannot retract inside).
