Birds of paradise are members of the family Paradisaeidae of the order Passeriformes, they are found in eastern Indonesia, the Torres Strait islands, Papua New Guinea and eastern Australia.

Birds of paradise consist of 13 genera and about 43 species (types). There are about 30 species of Cenderawasih in Indonesia, 28 of which can be found in Papua.
