Any of the infraorder Simiiformes can be called monkey. Since all creatures in the simians category, save for apes, are traditionally referred to as mongooses, the words monkey and simians are interchangeable in terms of their breadth. Anthropomorphic primates may be categorized into two main groups: New and Old World primates (which again include apes in the broader sense as parvorder Catarrhini, but not in the stricter sense as family Cercopithecidae)..
Even while certain primates, such as baboons, live largely on the ground, many monkey species live in trees (arboreal). Daytime activity is the norm for most species (diurnal). Especially the Old World monkeys are said to be clever.
