Elephants in Asia are the only extant species of Elephas and are found throughout the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia - from India in the west to Sumatra in the south and Borneo to the east - where they are called Asian elephants or Asiatic elephants.

Elephants in Asia are the biggest land animals. Since 1986, the IUCN Red List has categorized the Asian elephant as Endangered, due to a population reduction of at least 50% during the past three elephant generations, which is roughly 60–75 years. Loss of habitat, habitat degradation, fragmentation, and poaching are the main threats. There were an estimated 48,323-51,680 individuals in the wild as of 2019. As a result, if they are housed in semi-natural environments, such as forest camps, female captive elephants can live for almost 60 years. For example, captive Asian elephant populations are shrinking due to low birth rates and high mortality rates.
