Splatoon 2 Online Regular Battles (Recorded on 7/22/17)

Keet and I picked up Splatoon 2 on Friday, and we've been playing the game in the evenings since then. Ever since the Wii's Wi-Fi Connection got shut down in 2014, Keet and I have been keeping an eye out for online games that we can play together. We went through the entire Wii U era playing only Mario Kart 8 together, but the imbalanced items and lack of a proper battle mode made for a really frustrating game. Keet and I still longed for a mutiplayer team shooter.

Although I didn't own Splatoon on the Wii U, I had played the demo before the game had released. I thought the game was decent, but I wasn't going to be forced to use the GamePad like Nintendo wanted. I felt that Nintendo should have included Wii Remote support. Also, I didn't like the four-hour map rotation.

However, after the Nintendo Switch was fully unveiled and Splatoon 2 was shown, I decided to give the Splatoon series another shot due to the better control scheme. Keet also decided to join me, so just like that, the Ultimate Team was back in action.

The Joy-Con control scheme works really well in this game and basically feels like the Wii Remote and nunchuck setup from a Motion Plus game such as Skyward Sword. Since I'm readily familiar with gyro-based aiming, I had no trouble transitioning from infra-red pointer controls to gyro controls.

Keet and I played a bunch of matches Friday night and Saturday night, but these four matches are just from Saturday. I spent a lot of time trying out the rollers, but I found that I generally couldn't win if I went head-to-head with most opponents, so I needed a different weapon that better suit my style.

When I unlocked the Heavy Splatling last night, I immediately knew that would be my weapon of choice. The weapon gave me instant flashbacks of the Carbonizer from the Conduit series. Once I started wielding this behemoth, Keet and I began winning matches more consistently. It's officially my new laser cannon, and holy hell does it rock.

Keet's friend Scyor joined us during these matches, but unfortunately, the game didn't always put us on the same team. Keet and I are working hard to get into ranked matches and to obtain a B- rating we can start forming a team for League Battle, but until then, we just have to get lucky by having the game randomly place us on the same team.

On a related note, the phone app or whatever that's required for forming teams in this game is absolute bullshit. Nintendo should be ashamed of itself. Friend invites, voice chat and team lobbies should be built into the game itself, not hidden behind a stupid phone application. Hopefully Nintendo gets its head out of its ass and changes that with a future patch.
