Waterfalls are typically generated as lakes into valleys in high mountains in the upper course of a river.

A river will occasionally flow over a big step in the rocks that was produced by a fault line. Waterfalls can form along the edge of a glacial trough, when a stream or river that flows into a glacier continues to flow into a valley after the glacier has melted or receded. This feature, known as a hanging valley, is exemplified by the enormous waterfalls in Yosemite Valley. Another explanation for the formation of hanging valleys is when two rivers meet and one is running faster than the other.

Large underwater waterfalls can emerge when warm and cold water meet in a valley in the ocean, as the cold water rushes to the bottom.
