Volcen de Fuego is one of the most active volcanoes in the world and is located 44 kilometers (27 mi) from Guatemala City. This stratovolcano-type volcano has experienced more than 60 eruptions since 1524, including a major eruption in 1974 that produced pyroclastic flows that destroyed the region's winter crops and ashfall that covered nearby towns. A massive eruption occurred in 2002 and resulted in an explosive eruption in 2012 that forced 33,000 people to flee, but reported no deaths. The population around the volcano is estimated at 54,000 within 10 kilometers (6.2 mi) and more than one million within 30 kilometers (19 mi).
