The tweet of this subspecies is mainly local in that it communicates the identity and locations of one individual to other birds as well as signals of sexual desire. These tweets do not interfere with the sounds of birds that are used to alert and communicate and are important for birds feeding or migrating in flocks. While nearly all living birds make sounds of some kind, only a few subspecies that are not in the songbird lineage have distinctive tweets.
