In December 2009, less than one year into his first term in office, President Barack Obama was given the Nobel Peace Prize, joining a only two other U.S. Presidents, Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson who received the prize while in officer. Former President Jimmy Carter received the prize in 2002, two decades after his term ended. President Obama joins an even smaller group of African Americans who have won the prize.
