Mastering how to communicate as a police officer can mean the difference between a situation being handled without any use of force. It can also mean that you handle it without any stress.

Two words that sum up effective communication as a police officer. Yep, two words: Respect and Empathy.

Please consider that you are never better than anybody else simply because you are a police officer. You will make mistakes, just as I make mistakes because we are human. Now I am not excusing negligence and abuse of power, but there will be mistakes. So when you understand you're human and you are dealing with other humans, you will be more willing to respect them.

Even if someone is spitting on you, take the high road and be respectful. It takes a better person.

Which leads me into the next word, empathy. When people get mad at you, they don't know you, just that you are the police officer. So I encourage you to put yourself in their shoes and see where they are coming from. You dang sure do not have to agree with it, but through empathy and respect, you can calm someone down and it is the right thing to do at all costs.

And I understand that there are those 5% who will not respond to any verbal communication techniques.
