How Trauma Affects You [As A Police Officer]
How trauma affects you and how you can survive: https://bit.ly/SecureYourSanity
How does the mind interpret stimuli? In the case of Police, that stimuli, is trauma.
Ok, I'm definitely not a Psychologist and I am not someone who claims to know it all, but through many sessions of counseling and treatment, I have learned how trauma affects you.
There is an ingredient that determines whether or not a person becomes depressed or addicted.
Do you think it is found within the stressful stimulus in and of itself? NOPE
It is within you. It is within the person.
Take for example, horrific incidents that have shocked the world:
Challenger Spaceship explosion
September 11, 2001
Las Vegas Massacre
Some who experienced this, have handled it better than others, yet at the minimum, most remember where they were when it all happened or when they first heard about it.
So how do some perceive more positively than others? Could it be because some are more able to cope, and some are less equipped? I do believe so.
Let’s get the mind’s ability to cope.
But what I want to mention first is that gosh I wish there was more training on this! Yes, there might be mentions here and there about officer depression and if you use your firearm while on duty you might get resources, but for all things good there has to be more training!
Yet at the same time, it’s one heck of a topic to talk about and learn about the brain. Because of my mistakes, treatments, hard times, I’ve learned all about the brain
It’s a complex thing. It has what are called neurons, over 50 billion neurons. HAHA!
Also known as brain cells stores and transmits energy. Think about the hot stove. The pain signal travels from the hand up to the brain, “what do I do” and the smart brain says “abort” and sends a signal down to your hand to release the stove. Pretty quick.
Well, cops need to understand how the brain connects with the body, so you can have any hope of regaining, maintaining, and strengthening your mental health.
Have you received mental health training through your agency to learn how trauma affects the brain?
