The Blood of Jesus

Jesus had to suffer a horrible, gruesome death for us to live. But why? Why did Jesus have to spill His blood on Calvary just so we could be forgiven? If God is just and good, why does He require blood for forgiveness? Doesn't that make Him bloodthirsty?
