The core of the Greatest Rock and Roll Band in the World, the rhythmic foundation that was Charlie Watts passed away overnight at the age of 80. Never the most flashy, never the most bombastic, but his beats are quintessential to the sound that would shape all of music. His skills were appropriate for the music and it never overshadowed the rest of the band, he was a stable presence in a tumultuous line up since 1963.

Steve Jordan was to fill his seat as Charlie recovered from surgery. The replacement may be permanent, but who's to say how much longer the Stones will exist.

A great story about how he stood up and punched Mick Jagger right in the mouth for getting a bit to big for his position rounds out a send off from a lifelong fan. You will be missed.
