What is Lactose

A point of concern for many of our customers here at Syntrax Nutrition relates to lactose. One of the questions we get is, “What is Lactose?”

Lactose is a natural sugar commonly found in dairy products such as cow’s milk, yogurt, cheese and ice cream. Lactose aids in the development of microorganisms that live in the digestive tract of babies, and it also helps babies absorb calcium better.

For the body to digest lactose, it uses a natural enzyme called lactase that breaks down into two sugars: glucose and glycose. If your body doesn’t make enough lactase, you may not be able to break down or absorb lactose properly, which can lead to symptoms of lactose intolerance. Lactose intolerance symptoms can cause: gas, diarrhea, bloating, and stomach pain.

Something you might not know is that most lactose-intolerant people can eat or drink small amounts of dairy products with no side effects. For example, some can consume the amount of milk in coffee, but not the amount you would eat with a bowl of cereal.

Here at Syntrax, we understand there are many who are lactose intolerant so we created a lactose-free protein line called Nectar that contains no fat, no carbs and no lactose. This is a perfect protein solution for those who need to limit their lactose intake.
