20210822 The Prisoner's Dilemma - The Daily Summation

I'm not willing to argue over the original idea behind the "prisoner's dilemma."

What I want to do here--in the current edition of The Daily Summation from Kurt's Religion and Politics--is talk about where I see it can be useful in discussing how people see things.

Some seem to have stated the idea behind the prisoner's dilemma, as being a concern over people nearby (other prisoners) NOT supporting them, in their attempt to gain their "freedom," or create something like riots in the system.

Maybe that's what the expression initially intended to talk about.

If you ask me though, I would argue the majority of incarcerated people CONTROL THEMSELVES.

Why? Because THEY realize making a break from the jail is likely to cause a manhunt to occur.

In that situation, their life is at risk for the entire time that's going on. On top of that, they must look over their shoulders while at large.

To "add insult to injury," if they happen to get apprehended, they're likely FULLY AWARE, they risk YET MORE time in confinement, than if they just ride out their sentence.

THIS is reasonably analogous to what the average person feels--the things that keep him or her "in line."

If they feel as though they'll receive no support from those around them, they're likely to "behave and play nice."

This is what must be overcome in my view.

Risks must be taken if we're going to improve things.
