Melting glaciers in Antarctica could trigger a chain reaction that would lead to a new ice age. This conclusion was reached by an international group of scientists studying the effects of climate change at Cardiff University in the UK.

In their opinion, the melting of glaciers and icebergs contributes to the ingress of large volumes of fresh water into the Atlantic Ocean, where huge icebergs are carried out of the Southern Ocean together with the currents. The resulting fresher water in the Atlantic will draw carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, reducing the greenhouse effect and contributing to cooling.
