Beware Of The Bulging Battery! It Could Cause A Dumpster Fire, Or Worse

Lithium-ion batteries are inside almost anything to do with tools or technology. They’re light-weight, contain a lot of energy for their size, have long cycle durations and shelf-life, are quick to recharge, and have low self-discharge rates.

At the same time, they don’t like high temperatures, if poorly built they can be dangerous to transport, and have the potential to enter a thermal runaway cycle when under stress. This means they can catch fire.

We are suggesting that you watch these batteries for any type of failure. There are a number of possible reasons that a lithium-ion battery can swell or bulge.

The most common cause is an overcharge of the battery, which causes a chemical reaction between the electrodes and the electrolyte, resulting in the release of heat and gases that expand inside the battery, causing the casing to swell or even to split open.

Swelling can also result from a manufacturer’s defect, mechanical damage to the battery, or exposure to excessively high temperatures.

Also, lithium-ion batteries can swell as a result of deep discharge of the cells if not governed by the battery management system.

These bulges are all signs of danger and the need to remove these items from the area that you are living.
