Friendly humpback whale gives woman the experience of a lifetime

Humpback whales are among the most beautiful and gentle creatures on the planet. They are among the largest creatures on land or in the ocean, smaller than only a few other whale species. They are also among the most intelligent creatures to have ever lived. As recently as 100,000 years ago, humpbacks were even more intelligent than the ancestors of humans.

Tonga is one of the few places on earth where people can get in the water with humpback whales. Although there are strict rules about approaching the whales and it is forbidden to touch them, the whales will occasionally approach a human out of curiosity. One look into their soulful eyes will tell you that these are magnificent creatures, full of understanding.

We have long wondered how a humpback instinctively knows that they are capable of injuring a human if they strike or bump one with any force. Their massive bodies dwarf our own and they are powerful animals. Yet, they never harm humans and there are many cases of whales intentionally showing their gentle side by avoiding contact that would inflict injury.

This very lucky swimmer had slipped into the water near a playful male humpback, hoping for a close look and a few photographs. The whale slowly moved in her direction, rising beneath her in slow motion. It repeatedly rolled on its back, exposing its underside and swimming close to her.

This encounter went on for a full 18 minutes before the guide ended the swim so that the whale could enjoy a quiet rest. The numbers of people and the length of interaction are carefully monitored to ensure that the whales are not disturbed.

Humpback whales come to Tonga to give birth and to breed. These waters are free of sharks and orcas that prey on the whales, especially during vulnerable times. Often, male humpbacks will escort or accompany the females for several weeks after they give birth. This offers the females and their young a level of protection, and it possibly provides the male with an opportunity to breed when the female is ready.
It is unfortunate that these beautiful and gentle animals are still hunted in the waters around many countries. To lose them forever would be an unimaginable tragedy.

Yeah, that is an INSULT to the whales! The WHOLE ARTICLE declares them peaceful, etc.... And they COULD smallow a human and maybe have a snack. I don't know how tasty, and in a scuba suit that would be bad, and the human might try to cut its way out, but STILL, but they NEVER try! And whales generally live in peace. In a way, they ARE smarter than humans, even "smart humans".

My husband and I ran across a manatee in the water off Sarasota one day and it was truly amazing tho quite frightening because of its size. We initially weren't sure what it was. I can only imagine how fast that woman's heart must have been beating to encounter such a gentle giant.

Looking at what "might" be net scars on its upper torso area I'd say a human probably saved its life at one time. Maybe he/she is thanking them in their own way. I love how the whale is speaking to them. Amazing all around!!

I learned many years ago that the expression, "Oh my God," is taking His Name in vain. When it was explained to me, I took the correction to heart & eventually disappeared from my word arsenal.

Since Our Maker created that wonderful beast, we shouldn't take in vain His Glorious Name. I believe people say it without realizing what they're doing, like myself. Asking Yahweh's forgiveness for our mistakes is easy, as He stands ready & willing to forgive all but one sin.

Jesus made that once-in-a-lifetime op fall right across her path & she'll never forget it nor will it become faded in her memory!

Praise God for all His wondrous creatures & how they enrich our lives <3 <3 <3

Is it really taking His name in vain? Or is it an expression of wonder and appreciation? I think she's ok.

She was so thrilled with emotion, she called out to God. I do the same. When I stump my toe, I call out and Say Oh My God. More than once, as if God will help take the pain away. The other day, a beautiful turtle appeared in my yard. I said Oh My God repeatedly until the shock was gone. I was so excited. I Trust God! I also told him the turtle is so amazing but I don’t know anything about it. I did a quick search and figured out what to do but the turtle was gone by the time I went back outside15 minutes later. All good. Turtle didn’t need any help. Here’s a photo. Someone said could be looking to lay eggs https://gab.com/CaliGem/posts/106626484419476510

I don't suppose these self absorbed pinheads noticed that the whale is trying to draw attention to the human rope cutting into it that it surely would like them to remove.

REPLY

4

JAUJAU, 1 week ago
Good catch, maybe there WAS a rope there once. BUT if you watch while it rolls, you can clearly see how the line fades, etc.... It clearly is a scar. Whales live a long time, and are pursued, etc.... A human might have tried to help it, or capture it etc.. and might even have had a rope around it for a time, and that would have become the rope like scar. It could have also been from debris. A lot of humans are careless.

And someone here mentioned about gills. Whales are mammals, and breath air. They also know about the area above the water, and come up to be closer to one another, breath, and play, and they are less likely to be harmed by creatures that would harm them normally, and that puts them MORE at risk because that is an area humans are in.

Why would they need scuba gear at the surface? Scuba diving with whales in Tonga is actually prohibited.

"As recently as 100,000 years ago, humpbacks were even more intelligent than the ancestors of humans." very cool video, but what a dumb, unsupportable, and improbable proposition. our ancestors from 1/4 million years ago had relatively the same intelligence as we do. our difference is in the ACCUMULATION and PRESERVATION of knowledge. in some ways, they were superior to us in adaptability and survivability. otherwise, your ass wouldn't be here.
