Arto Artinian is a Bulgarian-born US academic teaching at the City University of New York. Maria Cernat invited Arto Artinian to On the Barricades to discuss his experiences as an intellectual laborer in the educational system in the United States. Arto has long experience of teaching in high school and college, so it is fascinating to hear him explain what it was like to become a high school teacher and what it means to be a teacher in college. Much of the academic experiences are glamorized, but, as our discussion will show, this is only a reflex of the era when college professors enjoyed a different social status.
