Paul presents the Christian life as slavery, not by force, but by free will.
We all serve something or someone, be it money, family, work, the flesh, pleasure, the list is endless. We subjugate ourselves to these gods/idols (sin).

Sin is a cruel master that destroys us spiritually as well as physically. Jesus Christ lifts us up, saves us, edifies us.

Paul declares that instead of subjugating ourselves to these other gods/idols, we should freely subjugate ourselves to being a slave of Jesus Christ, the only true good master, the master who died for His servants. What other master would die for his slave? Only Jesus Christ.
Jesus called us his friends. What master calls his slaves his friends? Only Jesus Christ.
