Ohio State Is Trademarking The Word 'THE'... Really?!

Can it be? Is it possible? Did Ohio State University actually manage to trademark the word “THE”? Not since 1998 when an American president challenged a nation to determine what the meaning of the word ‘is’ is, has the world been so engaged in the power of a single word ( and, no, ’Oprah’ doesn’t count).

1. Can Ohio State University simply use the word “The” in its merchandise/apparel?
2. Will they be able to successfully register this as a trademark?
