Truliant has been in use since 1999, and has a registered trademark. When the new BB&T/SunTrust entity attempted to use the name ‘Truist,’ representatives from Truliant were quick to act.

According to Truliant, the use of the ‘Tru’ family of trademarks is exclusive to their brand, and allowing for this new entity to be called ‘Truist’ would be trademark infringement. According to Truliant, the Truist brand is too similar in name and branding, which could confuse members into thinking the two companies are connected.

But are Truliant and Truist really close enough that they could be confused?
