Abstract
Welcome Thanz Adam Bays Mountain Planetarium -
Kingsport, TN Welcome Presentation 1 Hostetter Dave Retired - Lafayette Science
Museum “‘Supermoons:’ Not
Completely Evil?” Sure, they’re goofy, maybe there’s a way to use “supermoons” to get people out under the sky looking
for reality instead of hype.
Milutin Milankovitch described Earth’s movements over thousands of years. He postulated that Ice
Ages and other long-term climate changes were due to the amount of ice melting during the Northern
Hemisphere summer. This talk is about the causes of the Milankovitch Cycles, i.e. variations in axial tilt,
precession, and orbital eccentricity. It will show that they do not predict the current global warming
trend.

Rocket Center “OpenSpace:
Updates and Use
Cases” Hear from AMNH’s Director of Astrovisualization about recent updates to OpenSpace
(openspaceproject.com), an open-source platform for live programming in planetarium domes and
other public spaces, and for streaming online.
OpenSpace v0.17.0 was released earlier this month. See a short demo of new visualizations and
features, including the James Webb Space Telescope, exoplanet systems, and UI improvements.
Get ideas for how you can use OpenSpace from the U.S. Space & Rocket Center’s INTUITIVE
Planetarium Director. While closed to the public in 2020, the Rocket Center utilized OpenSpace for
planetarium-style tours live-streamed to Facebook. Now that the Rocket Center has reopened, it is
using OpenSpace for live programs on a video wall in its Saturn V Hall.
Lakey Ann Zeiss “UNIVIEW Open
Dome – New
Perspectives for
your Presentations” Imagine the dome as a huge monitor. Use this monitor for all kinds of presentations. UNIVIEW Open
Dome builds a bridge from any computer application to dome projection, in real time, in highest
resolution and with an absolutely smooth frame rate. The complex processes of multi-channel
projection with image splitting, warping and blending are efficiently handled by UNIVIEW on the basis
of system-specific configurations.

"Using Pop Culture
to Build
Attendance" One of the biggest challenges we face at our museum, and I’m sure at your facility as well, is getting
people off the couch—getting people to leave the house and come visit the museum and planetarium
as a destination. So, how do we motivate and excite people to come see planetarium shows devoid of
in-vogue celebrities? How do we inspire people to come visit a museum that doesn’t have Instagram-
famous name recognition?
