When Should I go to Confession?

The sacrament of Confession is one of the greatest gifts God has provided his Church, offering us grace and forgiveness whenever we have a contrite heart. But that doesn't mean that we necessarily HAVE to go to the sacrament. What are the requirements of the sacrament?
