What are Industry Groups?
US companies or stocks are grouped together based on common business types to standardize meaning and understanding.
Groups are defined by the Global Industry Classification Standard (GICS).
GCIS was developed by MSCI Inc. (Morgan Stanley Capital International) and S&P Dow Jones Indices.
Investors follow groups because one stock may be impacted by broader movements within an industry.
GICS categorizes stocks into 24 industry groups and 11 sectors (previous video).
Sectors vs Industry Groups
Market sectors have a broad focus.
Industry groups have a narrow focus.
To make it more confusing, some industry groups such as energy and utilities are also market sectors.
Sector or industry group analysis can help explain market moves and uncover possible opportunities.

GICS is widely used in the financial industry.
Some feel GICS helps market participants to identify and analyze companies using a common global standard.
GICS components are reviewed and adjusted annually.
