The city of Jaffna was a major stronghold of LTTE in Sri Lanka. The newly elected Sri Lankan president Chandrika Kumaratunga started peace talks with LTTE to liberate Jaffna. LTTE ambushed Sri Lankan Navy gunboats as peace talks failed, firing anti-aircraft missiles. On October 17, 1995 the Sri Lankan soldiers hit back at the LTTE and nearly 500 soldiers were killed. On December 5, 1995, Sri Lankan soldiers liberated the city and the LTTE retreated into the jungle.
