Feet should be trimmed as often as possible, approx every 2-3 weeks. Ideally in between your hoof care provider's visits.
The maintenance trim is simply removing the excess external hoof wall to mimic natural wear. If you train regularly and feel confident enough, it's something you can easily do on your own.

However, if your horse has important imbalances, it is paramount to address them properly on a regular basis. An experienced trimmer or farrier should control your work and correct the feet imbalances.

For this horse, a maintenance trim is necessary often to correct imbalances and because the owner is not in a position to perform a maintenance trim on the horse at all.
The bars were not trimmed on purpose for this trim and were trimmed away at the next corrective trim, 4 weeks later.
